Newborn Photographer Perth | Preemie Baby Girl

Oh I could squeeze and cuddle this gorgeous little bub every day of the week. Being a preemie baby, she was the teeniest, tiniest little bundle of gorgeousness. It was literally like holding a little doll.

So little Phoebe gave her parents a bit of a fright when she decided to come early. She spent 3 weeks in Neonatal (thank god for nurses and doctors, am I right?!) but all that is behind her now and she is safely home with her parents and doing super well. It was not lost on me, how much of a miracle these little babies are. I remember back to my own first child. She gave us such a run for our money when she was born. She, too, spent some time in Neonatal and then after that began all those scary tests where they were looking to rule out all sorts of scary outcomes. We were so lucky to have an amazing paediatrician who actually ended up looking after both our babies before moving back interstate.

I remember those early days in that neonatal unit. My husband sleepy head resting on the sink next to our daughter, refusing to leave her side as her oxygen levels kept setting off scary sounding alarms.

Life got very serious, very quickly.

My heart just reaches out to families that go though similar, and very often, much harder experiences. Here we were so scared for our little baby, when in reality she actually the healthiest baby in the neonatal unit. I can only imagine how the parents of the little baby who had just had open heart surgery were feeling, and the parents of the super preemie bub that was just so tiny that she couldn't even be held yet. That's when you realise what gratitude is. Instead of feeling like this was unfair, we started to feel so very, very grateful.

So having had these experiences, when a little miracle baby enters the studio (which is each and every one of them) I remember back to those first day and feel so grateful to not only have two healthy beautiful girls learning and growing at school, but also that I get to be a part of this special beginning.

Are you looking for a Newborn Photographer in Perth? I pride myself as a low volume studio, with a whole lot of love and care. You won't see me scheduling more than one session per day. I like to give my clients my undivided attention and have plenty of time to personally hand edit and retouch your precious memories. I provide top of the line products and artwork. This is about creating heirlooms. For clients that are on a budget, I have introduced digital only collections, however I really do encourage leaving your experience with me, holding something beautiful that you and your family can really cherish. I have been trained in newborn safety by the BEST in the industry. I am continually investing on education on newborn safety/posing and I have been a photographing newborns for over 9 years. If ever there was a time to be fussy in your selection of photographer, now is that time. I'll let you know right now, you will probably be able to find a cheaper photographer. There are so many start up photographers in Perth and there are bargains being offered left right and centre. I just ask that you pause when making your selection. Realise that this is not the time to just try anyone. Not your neighbour that just got a new camera. I know this sounds harsh and it really isn't meaning to come across like that, but babies are so fragile and so delicate. They need to be handled by someone who has been trained extensively. This is to ensure their safety. Im not bagging out the new photographers either. I was one! There is a time and a place for all varying degrees of experience and service. It's my humble opinion that this isn't that time though. Not with your brand new baby. An easy way to spot an experienced newborn photographer in Perth is to have a look at their price list! Not being funny, but if you have a newborn photographer offering you a session for $200 with all the digital files, that equates to around $16 per hour, not including insurances, equipment, safe props, assistants, studio rent or home studio expenses. I firmly believe that although we all start somewhere, the newborn industry really needs to be regulated to ensure safe practices. So often, new photographers will attempt to emulate poses that are actually very dangerous to do in one image. These are called composite images. Where the experience photographer will take several photographs and merge them all together for the end result. Personally, I have a hands on baby approach to all advanced posing. This means that at all times your baby is supported and comfortable. More importantly, safe. I will never force your baby into any position and I've very aware of those subtle cues, aware of the risks that arise when not posing properly. So as a starting point, ask your photographer if they have the necessary insurances, how many years have they been photographing newborns, who have they studied under. You have every right to know and to ask these questions. I'm all about building UP new photographers too, so if you are a newbie reading this post, PLEASE reach out! I am happy to point you in the right direction on where you can get some really amazing education and advice.

Ok guys, you have to know this, I'm rubbish at blogging! BUT... it is something I'm really trying to work on!! So all my gorgeous past clients, please do not feel left out! I will try to blog past sessions in the near future! I have a fancy new client management program that is allowing me to streamline and keep track of all my client work. This has been such a massive help and I've heard great things from our current clients. Being a sole business owner has its ups and downs for sure. I mean, there are those times where it's rainy and gross outside and I'm inside my nice warm (CLEAN!) studio in my pyjama bottoms and my uggies, rocking out to Taylor Swift tunes (not ashamed), but then there is also the less pleasant tasks of having to kinda be pretty decent at A LOT of stuff. Accounts. Yup. Not my favourite task but oh so essential! Do you know so many businesses close over just this alone. Not putting enough aside for tax time, making costs tax mistakes etc.. it's pretty scary when you think about it! If you told my mother and my accounting teachers that I would one day be responsible for running my own business and taking care of my own accounts you may still hear the echoes of their laughter ;) There is something pretty calming about accounts though. I mean, it's all about balance isn't it. Making sure that the ins are coming in and the outs are going out. That they balance, and are in harmony. It's a pretty zen concept and I'm coming around to not dreading it every month (if I'm being good!)

I love & hate Facebook like most people. I enjoy seeing what all the people I love are up to with their lives, especially people in my past that aren't even necessarily people I get to see very often. One of these people is my gorgeous friend Aliesha. We were music students at TAFE Leederville together back in the days. We both loves the same sort of music and I guess you could label us singer/songwriters. I still have songs that she has written (she cringed when I told her that) and I still love them. She has a killer voice and a great gift at songwriting. We got up to a fair bit of mischief together back in those days. We once ran a music competition called TUNE UP. We ran an ad in the local Xpress Mag for auditions and I think we only had about 2 people show up! We were much better as muso's than as event runners. We did find some great local talent in the end though and the TUNE UP competition went ahead as a huge success! I think we even had a grand prize of a guitar tuner for the winner hahahah. We did love being able to donate all the proceeds to our favourite local charity at the time, The Dogs Home in Shenton Park. I still have an image of us together with a bunch of pooches around us. Man, we were young!

Fast forward and we lost touch. Life happens and it's so easy to lose touch. I was busy building my own little family and raising my two gorgeous girls, yet I loved being able to see her travel, get engaged, married and then have their first gorgeous child, Kade. To see her walk into my little studio all those years later, with her own little family, gave me goosebumps. It was like nothing had changed and no time had passed. They are the best kind of friendships I reckon.

So meet gorgeous little KADE! This little boy is very lucky to have landed his Mum & Dad I reckon. I think these guys are going to have a lot of fun in the years ahead.

We have donated our services to their Long Table Lunches and various video & photography campaigns over the years and we are always left feeling like we've done some good in the world by serving such an amazing organisation. These guys are simply amazing. They are so dedicated and invested in making a difference in this world. They support and inspire men and women in their darkest, scariest hours and they make sure everyone gets the support they need. If ever there was a great charity to work with, it's these guys. I'm so proud to be able to help in any way that I can.

So June marks their annual IGA Purple Bra Day and it's a fun and colourful campaign! We arranged a studio day to capture some great images for to help spread the word about this fun and important day!

POLISHED WORKSHOP | PERTH NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

Recently I was lucky enough to secure a spot on Luisa Dunn & Elise Gow's Polished Workshop. This workshop was a masterclass style course that was designed for the advanced photographer looking to hone their skills in the genre of newborn photography. Up until that point all the skills that I had with Newborn Photography has been 100% trial and error and online videos. I have spent countless hours fixating on the subject and sponging up skills, tips and tricks from anywhere I could find them. Over the years I have really grown to love photographing newborns and babies in Perth, Western Australia. So this course was PERFECT for me! I met a whole bunch of other newborn photographers and of course, the lovely Luisa Dunn & Elise Gow. These girls were amazing. Now if you're familiar with Luisa & Elise's work, you'll know that they are both very passionate about COLOUR! It's one of the main reasons I wanted to take the course. I love neutrals AND I love colour. I don't want to have to choose. That's up to my clients to do!

Here are some images that I took during the course. All the stylings were the creative work of Luisa Dunn & Elise Gow. The images were edited by me.

A VERY SICK FURKID | PERTH FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

We got Buddy when he was a puppy. We were on our way to get a German Shepherd and he just happened to fall into our laps on the way there. He was naughty. Really super naughty. So naturally we were drawn to him and before I knew it he was sitting in my lap while we drove home. Buddy is an awesome dog. When our first baby arrived he crawled across the floor and rolled over in this instant submissive way. He knew this was big. This little squeaky human was someone to guard closely and he has been right beside her ever since.

So about 5 months ago we received some really awful news. Buddy had been acting strange for a few days and my instinct told me that I had to take him to the vet. I had a bad feeling.

Well, the vet took one feel of his tummy and whipped him into surgery within the hour. Out came his spleen and then in the following days came the earth shattering news that our beloved friend had lymphoma. We could have as little as a few weeks with him. As a mother, I cannot describe the pain I felt whenever I thought of my poor daughter having to say goodbye to her very best friend. They were inseparable.

Knowing that time is coming to an end, I really wanted to capture Buddy with the girls. My youngest was just getting to the stage where she wasn't climbing all over him and annoying him and because of this the below photo is just so precious. She is holding him with such tenderness.

I know time is short. I know the day will come where I will just have to hold my girls and listen to them cry. But for now we have these memories and forever they will have these images to treasure.

First Shoot in the new studio!!!

There's something that I just love about Maternity Photography. It's the excitement, the anticipation. Sure, sometimes a few nerves, but for the most it's mothers at peace ready to pop! Watching them takes me right back to when I was pregnant with my girls. Memories that time cannot erase. They are engrained into our beings for eternity. Motherhood is such a beautiful thing. I feel so passionate about capturing this moment for future generations. These images become so treasured, such a powerful communication of a time gone past. Im sad that I don't have any to pass onto my two girls. Almost makes me want to get pregnant again just so I can record it!! Ha ha I definitely said ALMOST!!! Hee hee.

I was so proud to be the official photographer for the Breast Cancer WA - Long Table Lunch this year. I love the opportunity of giving back to the community where I can and this event was amazing to be a part of.
